The Four-Day Workweek

Cameron Moll Go to the source

There’s something not generally mentioned by those advocating a four-day workweek: tuning out the rest of the world on day five. Lots of us webbies have either promoted the idea of a four-day workweek, or have sought after it, or both. Not a 4/10 workweek , but four days of normal working time and three days of non-working time. Carsonified was one of the first to promote the idea, and recently Ryan Carson wrote once again on the topic. 37signals joined in a little later… Read the rest here

Is there a right way to use Twitter?

Andy Budd Go to the source

There are a handful of people who follow me on Twitter who continually moan about the way I use the service. Some complain when I tweet about what I’ve eaten, who I’ve met or what I’ve done that day. Others complain when I use Gowalla or Foursquare to announce my location or post a stream of consciousness on a topic that is currently bugging me. An obvious reaction is to remind those people that nobody is forcing them to follow me and they can easily unfollow if they don’t like what I’m saying. In fact, I have done just that on several occasions. However Twitter is an unusual hybrid of public discussion and private conversation… Read the rest here

Edit Your Head (Styles)

When I saw Ian Lloyd tweet the words “Cunning. Like a fox. Neat little trick!” I knew I had to check it out, because Ian’s a sharp one. So I popped over to the linked CSS-Tricks article, Show and Edit Style Element , and checked it out. Cunning indeed! And yet, it immediately bothered me. … Read the rest here

Announcing The Icon Handbook

Hicksdesign Go to the source

Let’s get straight to it! I’m busy writing a book called “The Icon Handbook” to be published by Five Simple Steps , hopefully at the latter end of this year. It will be ‘application-agnostic’, looking at the process of creating icons for web as well as software. It will be a manual, reference guide and coffee table book in one. For the last 5 years I’ve been wanting to write this book – I keep looking around for other books of its type on the market, but never find any. … Read the rest here

Going Postel

Adactio Go to the source

I wrote a little while back about my feelings on hash-bang URLs: I feel so disappointed and sad when I see previously-robust URLs swapped out for the fragile #! fragment identifiers. I find it hard to articulate my sadness… Fortunately, Mike Davies is more articulate than I. He’s written a detailed account of breaking the web with hash-bangs . It would appear that hash-bang usage is on the rise, despite the fact that it was never intended as a long-term solution. … Read the rest here

Verizon iPhone: “Most Successful Launch Day in History”

Verizon iPhone: “Most Successful Launch Day in History” : It’s full of corporate fluff, as you might expect. But here’s the gist of Friday’s press release: ‘This was an exciting day,’ said Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer for Verizon Wireless. ‘In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history. And, when you consider these initial orders were placed between the hours of 3 a.m. and 5 a.m., it is an incredible success story. It is gratifying to know that our customers responded so enthusiastically to this exclusive offer — designed to reward them for their loyalty.’ /via @ zeldman … Read the rest here

On becoming a Dad

Clagnut Go to the source

Two weeks ago I became the father of a beautiful baby girl. Welcome, Gracie, to the world. It is a strange and wonderful thing, this fatherhood lark. These first two weeks have been the proverbial emotional rollercoaster; not so much with ups and downs, but more of a permanent up with occasional plummeting downs as emotions and sleep deprivation kick in. This was no great surprise… Read the rest here
