Bye-Bye Redirect

SimpleBits Go to the source

A month into using Tumblr for the blog and portfolio here, and I’m still happy I made the move. Something that had been bothering me was the redirect that was required for the homepage. I couldn’t point simplebits.com at Tumblr completely. If I had, over 10 years of files and old archives would’ve vanished. Setting up a subdomain avoids that, but I wanted the blog to be the main index of the site. So redirecting simplebits.com to stream.simplebits.com was the best I could do. … Read the rest here

On moving work

SimpleBits Go to the source

Decided to simplify things and just start another Tumblr to handle the portfolio here. This enabled me to reuse the new theme with some slight tweaks, and begin my “different shade background for each section” thing. It’s far from comprehensive yet, as I still need to bring over some more of the old stuff. It’s been interesting going through work that’s several years old. Much of it doesn’t exist anymore. Gone… Read the rest here

Cameron Moll Go to the source

TumblrBits : Dan Cederholm, on switching to Tumblr: I don’t have time to customize another CMS. I used to love having the time to customize a CMS only to find a better one and customize that. I’m aiming for efficiency now…. If I waited till everything was perfect I would’ve never launched this thing. I’m now ok with doing things in stages. I think the most important thing in all of this is that I’ll be able to post quickly, easily, with less effort. … Read the rest here

Like many others before me, I’ve moved the weblog portion of SimpleBits over here to Tumblr . I did this for many reasons. I like that there’s one f!@#$ing template. That’s it. I don’t miss comments… Read the rest here

Introducing Dribbble

SimpleBits Go to the source

Let the games begin! Rich Thornett and I have been building Dribbble for what seems like years (oh wait, it has been that long). About a week ago, we quietly rolled back the curtain so the public could finally see what’s been happening in private beta. I’m pretty damned excited about this. Firstly, what is Dribbble? From the FAQ : Dribbble is show and tell for designers, developers and other creatives. … Read the rest here

Colosseo Contest #4: Win a Dribbble Invite

Cameron Moll Go to the source

It’s been a fun week for me. Two iPad giveaways ( Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G ), a rebound playoff , and today’s invite giveaway—all with the intent of helping provide some exposure for my Colosseo poster. Thanks to everyone who has participated so far. First, on Dribbble: To be clear, I take no credit for what Dribbble has become. Credit is to be given to Dan Cederholm and Rich Thornett … Read the rest here

Dribbble: A Designer’s Twitter

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Dribbble , masterfully crafted by Dan Cederholm and Rich Thornett , went live over the weekend. I don’t recall all the details, but probably sometime in 2008, Dan Cederholm and I had a conversation about an app he was considering building. Fundamentally, the idea was to build a community loosely based on the same concept as the “ Screen Grab Confab ” posts on my site. (Remember those?) The concept was simple, embracing the brevity and utility of Twitter and adding to it visuals: Share a snippet of what you’re currently designing, but only a snippet. Let others reply. Dan asked if I had any issues with the idea… Read the rest here

New at the Shop

SimpleBits Go to the source

A few weeks ago, we moved the studio (affectionately dubbed the BitCave) across the street to newer, slightly larger digs. It’s more comfortable, the windows open, we have our own temperature controls–you know, real lavish stuff. Yesterday, we relaunched the SimpleBits Shop , bringing the fulfillment back in house. Our slightly larger space is able to accomodate the stock, and now each order will be lovingly hand-packed by resident Commerce Director, Meagan Fisher . … Read the rest here

SimpleBits Go to the source

Well, after 6+ years on an ancient and highly customized install of Movable Type 3.15, and 4+ years on various homegrown CMS solutions, I’ve finally upgraded the guts of this site. I chose WordPress. Sure, there are several other excellent options out there to power the blogs of 2010 and beyond, but the familarity of WP, its plugins, pricetag and other factors all fed into the decision. Plus, I told Matt in the halls of SWSW in 2003 that I’d try his little weblog project. … Read the rest here

Ten things you may not know about me

Cameron Moll Go to the source

I know, this feels like a Facebook meme or something like that. But in the absence of having time to post something more substantial, this will have to do. I go in for knee surgery tomorrow, hence a large part of the reason things have been relatively silent around here. This is due to a severe injury playing soccer (football) and several weeks of physical therapy since, consuming a lot of my spare time. This will be surgery #5 for me, the continuation of a history of knee problems since I was 16. The most ridiculous injury so far… Read the rest here

We’ve printed up a new version of the popular Charge Tee . This time around, it’s a rusted battery on a Navy Blue, 100% cotton shirt from American Apparel. It’s also the first item in our newly relaunched shop.simplebits.com . The fine folks at AcmePrints have been printing SimpleBits tees for us for years, and they’re now handling the order fulfillment as well. This will allow us to concentrate on more important stuff, like offering more designs, rather than packing and shipping shirts (even though we enjoyed that). … Read the rest here

Now that we’ve announced the book , we can also announce another exciting thing: Handcrafted CSS: A Day of Markup & Style will be a unique, one-day workshop presented by Ethan Marcotte and myself on September 14, 2009 at the Hawthorne Hotel here in Salem, Massachusetts . The Hawthorne Hotel is located in downtown Salem, just 16 miles north of Boston. It’s also just a 10-minute walk from the MBTA Commuter Rail station which connects Salem to Boston in about 25 minutes… Read the rest here

Announcing: Handcrafted CSS

I wrote another book. It’s called Handcrafted CSS: More Bulletproof Web Design , and it’ll be published by New Riders next month. I had help this time.
