I swear there’s some kind of quantum entanglement going on between Ethan ’s brain and mine. Demonstrating spooky action at a distance, just as I was jotting down my half-assed caveat related to responsive design, he publishes a sharp and erudite explanation of what responsive design is and isn’t attempting to do. He uses fancy learnin’ words and everything: When I’m speaking or writing about responsive design, I try to underline something with great, big, Sharpie-esque strokes: responsive design is not about “designing for mobile.” But it’s not about “designing for the desktop,” either. Rather, it’s about adopting a more flexible, device-agnostic approach to designing for the web. … Read the rest here

The Elements of Content Strategy

Jason Santa Maria Go to the source

If you think your site’s content doesn’t matter, then you are sorely mistaken. Granted, the argument for content strategy has always mystified me. Not because I think we can do without content strategy, we can’t, but I’m amazed that we still have to make the argument. Folks care very much about appearances; what their websites look like means the world to them. But why don’t they care just as much about what their sites are saying? … Read the rest here

Hiring: Mobile Web Developer at WillowTree Apps : Virginia-based WillowTree Apps has launched an impressive 70+ apps since 2008 for the iOS, Blackberry, Windows 7, and Android platforms. I was fairly impressed as I flipped through their portfolio. If you know HTML5/CSS3 inside and out, have a solid understanding of JavaScript, and have experience working with at least one high-level, server-side language, you’ll contribute to making their portfolio even more impressive. Position is in Charlottesville, and relocation assistance is offered for the right candidate. … Read the rest here

Now that the Shelf Theme is finally launched, I wanted to write up some of the process and challenges that The Theme Foundry and I faced in it’s creation. I’d started with the intention of dribbling everything, but constantly found that I wanted to show more than 400×300px, so I started documenting the process in a Flickr Set instead. This post will flesh those out further. Creation I had a very clear picture in my head of how it should look, so my first step was to create what I call a ‘ HTML Sketch”: This is where I set up basic text and positioned boxes to make sure the layout was actually possible – a series of horizontally arranged ‘cards’ on a shelf, where the card height collapsed when the viewport was too small and the cards didn’t wrap. … Read the rest here

I was in Dublin recently to give a little talk at the 24 Hour Universal Design Challenge 2010 . It was an interesting opportunity to present my own perspective on web design to an audience that consisted not just of web designers, but designers from many different fields. I gave an overview of the past, present and future of web design as seen from where I’m standing. You can take a look at the slides but my usual caveat applies: they won’t make much sense out of context. There is, however, a transcript of the talk on the way (the whole thing was being captioned live on the day). Towards the end of my spiel, I pointed to Tim Berners-Lee’s recent excellent article in Scientific American, Long Live the Web: A Call for Continued Open Standards and Neutrality : The primary design principle underlying the Web

A brief list of false dichotomies

Adactio Go to the source

In the world of web development, there are many choices that are commonly presented as true or false, black and white, Boolean, binary values, when in fact they exist in a grey goo of quantum uncertainty. Here are just three of them… Accessible and inaccessible Oh, would that it were so simple! If accessibility were a “feature” that could be controlled with the flick of a switch, or the completion of a checklist, front-end web development would be a whole lot easier. Instead it’s a tricky area with no off-the-shelf solutions and where the answer to almost every question is “it depends.” Solving an accessibility issue for one set of users may well create problems for another. Like I said: tricky. Documents and applications Remember when we were all publishing documents on the web, but then there was that all-changing event and then we all started making web apps instead? No… Read the rest here

Why Windows Phone 7 Will Make Android Look Chaotic

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Why Windows Phone 7 Will Make Android Look Chaotic : Brian X. Chen, writing for Wired: With brand new test facilities, Microsoft is taking on the duty of ensuring that touchscreens and sensors are calibrated properly, for example, and each hardware model undergoes software stress tests to catch bugs and system errors (see picture above). The end result should be getting very close to the same OS on smartphones made by different manufacturers. That in turn could mitigate the issue of fragmentation for third-party developers: They can effectively code the same app for a large party of devices without much tweaking. This approach positions Microsoft somewhere in between Apple

My iPad Experience with a Bluetooth keyboard

Snook Go to the source

On an impulse, I decided to buy the Bluetoothed Apple Wireless keyboard for use with the iPad. I felt there were times where I would want to create content without wanting to pull out my laptop and still have the flexibility of putting the keyboard away to enjoy the usual benefits of the iPad. I’m sitting in the middle seat of a six-hour flight home and thought, "this would be a good time to give this a try"— especially with blog post ideas popping to mind. As it turns out, the experience is quite nice. … Read the rest here
