All For Me

Jason Santa Maria Go to the source

by Erin Kissane W hen I was five, my grandfather kept a stash of 3 Musketeers bars on top of his fridge. Not just a handful, but an actual display box like the ones in the check-out aisle at the grocery. He bought them because they were my favorites; they lived on the fridge because they were contraband. I wasn’t supposed to have sugar. Honey and blackstrap molasses from a co-op grocery that smelled like carob-flavored mummy, sure, but not the refined stuff then subject to a hippie-driven moral panic. … Read the rest here

Retrick/Retreat

by Frank Chimero T he year before was a complete disappointment for all of us. A timely newsletter from the school reminded parents of the dangers of a diet too high in sugar, and that killed our joy. Worse yet: there were suggestions. “Instead of a Rice Krispy treat, why not a rice cake? Rather than a candy bar, maybe try an apple! If you’re thinking about Twizzlers, why not a pencil?” If you wish to see a maniacally enraged, completely unhinged seven-year-old, ask him to dress up, promise him candy, have him come to your door step, and then give him school supplies. … Read the rest here

This beautiful Apple Airport Basestation was my 30th birthday present from my wife, quite possibly one of the best presents I’ve ever had. The gift of wireless. In those days it was 1mb broadband, but it was still exciting being able to work from anywhere in the house. These days it’s been overtaken by N wireless devices, but it’s such a design classic that it has to be on display. It’s new home is the windowsill next to my desk at Webble Mill. … Read the rest here

Fixing Font Display in Thunderbird 3.1

Eric Meyer Go to the source

If you upgraded Thunderbird and discovered that the fonts used to display messages suddenly changed, and worse still, you were unable to get all messages to obey your font display settings, then this post is most likely for you. Here’s what happened to me: I upgraded to Thunderbird 3.1, and suddenly all my messages were in a font I didn’t recognize or appreciate. I insist on seeing only the plain text version (technically, the text/plain part) of all my e-mail; and what’s more, that it be displayed in a monospace font. Courier 13, in my case. So I made sure “View > Message Body As” was still set to “Plain Text”, which it was… Read the rest here

Type Hinting

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Type Hinting : Peter Bi?ak: I have been designing type since the early 1990s, and for as long as I can remember, type designers have been saying that hinting would soon be made obsolete by new advances in hardware and software. Now, almost 20 years later, hinting seems to be more relevant than ever. According to Peter, hinting

Changing Display Resets Scroll Offset

Snook Go to the source

In Chrome 5, Safari 4, Opera 10.53 and sometimes Firefox (although I was unable to reproduce it in this test case), changing the visibility of the element by toggling display:none will cause the scroll offset to reset to zero. Toggling visibility:hidden does not seem to trigger the same problem. Scroll the container and then toggle the classes applied. … Read the rest here

iPad vs. Kindle: An E-Reader Showdown

iPad vs. Kindle: An E-Reader Showdown : Joelle Alcaidinho, Unplggd : While we love that the iPad is more than an e-reader, we do not like how difficult it is to read outside, the incredible amount of glare (even indoors, all too often all we could see was our reflection instead of the text), and the weight (one handed reading on the train is a serious no-go). Reading on the iPad also does not provide the same book-like experience as it does on the Kindle. Thanks to the e-Ink display on the Kindle we really are able to forget that we are reading on an electronic device. I don

Font-face in Chrome

Some days you can tell that @font-face embedding is still trying to find its feet in becoming a stable and viable solution. Chrome 4 and 5 beta currently have a bug that creates some weird behaviour.
