iPad Outsells Mac

Cameron Moll Go to the source

iPad Outsells Mac : Dan Frommer: During the June quarter, Apple sold 9.2 million iPads for $6 billion in revenue. It also sold 3.9 million Macs for $5.1 billion in revenue. Apple even admitted that some of the iPad’s success was at the Mac’s expense: ‘We do believe that some customers chose to purchase an iPad instead of a new Mac during the quarter,’ Apple COO Tim Cook said on the company’s earnings call, ‘but we also believe that even more customers chose to purchase an iPad over a Windows PC.’ This is astounding. … Read the rest here

Authentic Jobs UK

Hicksdesign Go to the source

Aside from “Will you ever do a theme for GMail?” and “Know any good Penny Farthing Emporiums?” the questions I get asked the most are “Do you know of any jobs?” or “Can you let people know about this job?”. I help where I can in getting word out. It’s natural then, for Hicksdesign to snap up the invitation to be a part of the new UK division of Authentic Jobs . Along with Elliot Jay Stocks , Sarah Parmenter , Floris Dekker , we will be joining the existing Authentic Jobbers showing the latest vacancies on our blogs, and broadcasting the occasional tweet. … Read the rest here

PhotoSwipe, an Image Gallery for Mobiles Devices : HTML/CSS/JS-based image gallery specifically targeting mobile phones and tablets. Why Every Child in America Needs an iPad

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Why Every Child in America Needs an iPad : Mike Elgan: Everybody’s asking: Are iPads healthy for children? I’m here to tell you: That’s the wrong question. The right question is this: Is the iPad a healthy replacement for TV? And I believe the answer is a resounding yes. … Read the rest here

Bento Book

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Bento Book : Core77: The Bento Book is a system of devices that work together… kind of like Voltron. The phone, tablet, hard drive, and battery dock into the base of the laptop to essentially form half of it. The phone becomes the track pad, the tablet becomes a touch screen keyboard/input area, somewhat like a Nintendo DS. Content can be surfed on the tablet, and then say you want to modify that content, or interact with it more deeply, you dock the tablet into the screen to continue working with it in a more focussed way. Then you can pop the phone out to take it all on the road… Read the rest here

Adactio Go to the source

Paul Irish , Divya Manian and Shi Chuan launched Mobile Boilerplate recently—a mobile companion site to HTML5 Boilerplate . There’s some good stuff in there but I was a little surprised to see that the meta viewport element included values for minimum-scale=1.0, maximum-scale=1.0, user-scalable=no : <meta name=”viewport” content=”width=device-width, target-densitydpi=160dpi, minimum-scale=1.0, maximum-scale=1.0, user-scalable=no”> Setting user-scalable=no is pretty much the same as setting minimum-scale=1.0, maximum-scale=1.0 . In any case, I’m not keen on it . Like Roger , I don’t think we should take away the user’s right to pinch and zoom to make content larger. That’s why my usual viewport declaration is: <meta name=”viewport” content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1″> Yes, I know that most native apps don’t allow you to zoom but I see no reason to replicate that failing on the web… Read the rest here

Cosmonaut, a Wide-Grip Stylus for Touch Screens

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Cosmonaut, a Wide-Grip Stylus for Touch Screens : Glif makers Dan Provost and Tom Gerhardt are at it again with another Kickstarter project, this time for a wide-grip stylus that feels more like a dry erase marker rather than a pen: Writing or drawing on the iPad feels nothing like using a pen or pencil. For one, tablets are ideal for low fidelity sketching. Also, it is pretty awkward to rest your palm on the screen of the device because it throws off the capacitive detection. Writing on a tablet feels like writing on a dry erase board: fast, simple, low fidelity. … Read the rest here

The handbag app that almost was

Hicksdesign Go to the source

Last year, I submitted my very first app to the App Store. It was rejected 3 weeks later. This is its brief story… Wes West from Torchbox first gave me the idea to create an iPhone app for Oooh! It was a great idea, and one that would give me a learning opportunity to develop and submit my own app. It would be fun, and free! All it needed to do was to “ooooOooooh!” when shaken. While I created all the necessary graphics, Simon Whitaker of Goo Software handled the development side, implementing the shake-to-ooh function and guiding me through the whole process from start to finish… Read the rest here

The Story of

Hicksdesign Go to the source

Now that the Shelf Theme is finally launched, I wanted to write up some of the process and challenges that The Theme Foundry and I faced in it’s creation. I’d started with the intention of dribbling everything, but constantly found that I wanted to show more than 400×300px, so I started documenting the process in a Flickr Set instead. This post will flesh those out further. Creation I had a very clear picture in my head of how it should look, so my first step was to create what I call a ‘ HTML Sketch”: This is where I set up basic text and positioned boxes to make sure the layout was actually possible – a series of horizontally arranged ‘cards’ on a shelf, where the card height collapsed when the viewport was too small and the cards didn’t wrap. … Read the rest here
