Apple to Provide Live Video Streaming of Today’s Event : I recall the last time we were able to watch a live-video Apple event. I believe it was for the launch of Newton back in 1994. On a serious note, this will be a first for everyone: The ability to watch it live with an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. /via Daring Fireball … Read the rest here

‘The Big Picture’ App for iPad and iPhone

Cameron Moll Go to the source

‘The Big Picture’ App for iPad and iPhone : My favorite photoblog, The Big Picture , now has universal app for iPad and iPhone. It’s version 2.0, which tells me the iPhone version has probably been out for some time and I didn’t even know it. The two elements that have made The Big Picture a success over other photoblogs are the supersized photos and the inline placement of those photos, forgoing the traditional paginated view (which usually makes advertisers happier). With the iPad app, you get big photos but you lose the inline placement and the ability to quickly scan through all images. Instead, you have to swipe to the next photo — a very conventional interaction on iPad, but an interaction that counters what has made The Big Picture such a hit. At the very least, I’d like to see an option that allows me to see all of the photos at once, e.g. … Read the rest here

Twelve South’s Compass iPad Stand: A Review

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Twelve South’s Compass iPad Stand: A Review : I needn’t write a review of my own. This one covers everything, both the good and the bad — very little of it mind you, but I have the same problem with the foot peg occasionally muting the volume. However, I currently use the Griffin FlexGrip , which usually prevents the volume button from being depressed anyway. (I had to ditch the DODOcase , regrettably. More about that later.) In short, the Compass is one of the most useful, well-built pieces of hardware that I’ve purchased in quite some time… Read the rest here

Apple Patent for Dual-Mode Touchscreen Desktops/Laptops

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Apple Patent for Dual-Mode Touchscreen Desktops/Laptops : Chris Foresman, Ars Technica: Patently Apple recently discovered a patent application filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization earlier this year, which reveals that Apple has considered how both desktop and laptop computers could switch from a more traditional desktop UI best suited for use with a keyboard and mouse to a UI geared for touch input. Such machines could use a sort of hybrid between Mac OS X and iOS, switching UI layers for the most appropriate context. This is purely speculative, and I’m sure Apple will give the idea plenty of time to bake. But if the device were affixed to my desk, it might have little value for me personally. … Read the rest here

iPad Gripe Session

Cameron Moll Go to the source

iPad Gripe Session : Khoi Vinh: As a gesture to invoke the Undo command, shaking a handheld device the size of an iPhone is clever and workable. Shaking a much larger device like the iPad is awkward at best and violates one infrequently violated but nevertheless important law of good user interface design: don’t force the user to look like a fool [original euphemism deleted in deference to British sensitivities] in order to use any given feature. … Read the rest here

Vimeo Releases Embeddable HTML5 Video Player

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Vimeo Releases Embeddable HTML5 Video Player : Adrianne Jeffries, writing for ReadWriteWeb: Vimeo is releasing a ‘universal player’ today that allows user to watch embedded Vimeo videos on mobile devices including the iPhone and iPad using the video playback capability built into the new HTML5 standard. Vimeo will deliver the optimal player — Flash, HMTL5 or native — based on a user’s browser, as well as the appropriate video definition (HD, SD, mobile) and compression standard (H.264 or WebM, an open format developed for use with HTML5). Also announced is an Instapaper -style feature: Vimeo also announced a ‘watch later’ button today that will cue videos up in a playlist for users to catch up on when they get home from work. The ‘watch later’ feature is also cued up to be added to Vimeo’s Application Programming Interface, or API. … Read the rest here

On Publishing

Cameron Moll Go to the source

On Publishing : Elliott Jay Stocks: Right now, in an age of print-on-demand for real-world publication and iPads / iPhones / Kindles for virtual publication, it would — on the face of it — seem unwise to launch a magazine like 8 Faces, especially as it’s targeted at such a niche audience. As I said in the introduction of the magazine, “everything about this project shouldn’t work.” But it has, and it’s done so in a bigger way than I ever would’ve imagined. I’m saddened I won’t see a physical copy of issue #1, as I was out of the office the day it was released. (The issue sold out within two hours that day.) iOS icon template for Illustrator CS5

Hicksdesign Go to the source

With the iPad and iPhone 4, there are as many, if not more, different size icons to create for iOS than there are for desktop apps. While there are plenty of templates and reference sheets for Photoshop users (see Cocoia ) I prefer to use Illustrator CS5 to create mine. So I’ve made my own template, and it’s available here if you find it useful too! Download the iOS icon template for Illustrator CS5 The top layer of the file contains labels and a mask to add the rounded corners of the icon. Don’t forget to hide these before you export. Corner Radius Something that Apple doesn’t include in it’s documentation are the various corner radius dimensions for all the icon sizes… Read the rest here
