In Sugar We Trust

Jason Santa Maria Go to the source

written and designed by Rob Weychert When I was growing up, holidays offered early indications that communication design was in my future. Determined to avoid disappointment on Christmas morning, I made what I wanted perfectly clear to both Santa Claus and my parents, constructing lists that were not only categorized and prioritized, but cross-referenced with several catalogs. My approach to Halloween was no less meticulous. Putting together appropriately macabre costumes certainly appealed to my creativity, but as a child of the

Mathematics of the Tootsie Pop

by Liz Danzico E veryone had a right way. Consume the chocolate off the top and bottom of the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups first, saving peanut butter for last. Chomp the ends off strawberry Twizzlers, crafting a straw perfect for drinking 1985-vintage Cherry Coke. But none was more contested in our neighborhood than how many licks it took to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. 1 Candy is not mathematics. … Read the rest here

Becoming a Font Embedding Master

Snook Go to the source

I’ve spent a couple days worth now trying to figure out the best and most complete approach to font embedding using @font-face . It really is a dark art that must be mastered. It is by no means a straightforward process. Font Formats Generally speaking, these days, a font on our system is going to be one of two formats: TrueType (with a .ttf file extension) or OpenType (with a .otf file extension). While it would be nice to be able to just throw a font like this on the web and link it up, we’re hit with two major limitations… Read the rest here

Screencast: Converting OTF or TTF to EOT

In case you hadn’t noticed the lovely titles on this page, they’re League Gothic . Well, they should be if you happen to be using the latest version of Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer. However, it took much trial and error to figure out exactly how to get there. There are a number of pieces to the puzzle but in the end, I got something to work. The assumption here is that you are on a Mac (as I am) but I believe these tools work the same on PC… Read the rest here

The dConstruct Time Capsule

Clagnut Go to the source

You have just two more days to enter the dConstruct Time Capsule competition which could win you a VIP ticket to the conference, including dinner with the speakers at a swish restaurant and two nights at a fancy-pants hotel in Brighton. Tickets to the conference are very, very near to selling out so winning might be your only chance to get to dConstruct this year. How do you enter? Well, the theme of this year’s dConstruct is Designing for Tomorrow so that got us thinking about what we would preserve for the future in a time capsule. So take a look around you… Read the rest here

dConstruct Time Capsule Project

Andy Budd Go to the source

The theme for dConstruct this year is “designing for tomorrow”. This got us thinking about what cultural objects or experiences may not be around in the future. The kind of things that future digital archeologists may uncover and showcase in museums or write hypothesis about their place in naughties culture. We had our own ideas, ranging from obvious things like Twitter, Facebook and the iPhone, to slightly more obscure things like the mass of wires and adapters than plague our digital lives, or the fact that you have to carry a piece of card on a train to prove your right to travel. However we wanted to hear from you, so we started the dConstruct Time Capsule Project … Read the rest here

Where

Jason Santa Maria Go to the source

As you’ve probably noticed, I’ve been taking a bit of a break lately. But there’s some exciting stuff coming up in the not too distant future. Excuses, Excuses Despite the temptations of ever-warming weather, I had to throw most of my free time towards a new presentation for An Event Apart and @media last week, and on a gameplan for teaching in the fall. Well, that and sometimes I just don’t have much of anything to say. Rather than drop posts on here that I don’t care about, I decided to take a few weeks away from this site to recharge. … Read the rest here

Past visions of the future

Adactio Go to the source

This 1969 vision of a future household is remarkably prescient in some ways but unfortunately dated when it comes to gender roles: What the wife selects on her console will be paid for by the husband on his counterpart console. The Internet in 1969 By 1993, AT&T were showing a more equally balanced vision of the future. AT&T 1993

Profile Madness

Mezzoblue Go to the source

I thought I had Adobe’s colour profiles all worked out. I really did. I’m sure they’re great for photographers and print designers and so on. The problem is, on the web, we deal with browsers and image formats that don’t support colour profiles. With a few exceptions, we can’t use them even if we want to. … Read the rest here

Authentic Jobs: Advice for Staying Gainfully Employed

Cameron Moll Go to the source

The redesign for Authentic Jobs , which is coming along swimmingly thanks to your feedback, will include a blog to allow myself and others to post articles on the topic of employment, freelancing, and the like. The following is one such article. I’ve been bookmarking the links below over the past few months in anticipation of the new blog. However, because the redesign is taking longer than I had hoped, I’ve decided to post the article now given the timeliness of the subject. The last 6 months or so have been rocky for just about everyone and every business, and with layoffs and budget cutbacks, job search is certainly no exception. Many more applicants, but far fewer job openings… Read the rest here

Grey Designs Part 7 - 30 fresh samples

Design Melt Down Go to the source

It doesn’t seem like a true color trend pops up very often. But lately one has become incredibly clear to me. The usage of gray on the web is definetly on the upswing. Is gray the new black? The new blue? What ever it is, its being used a lot… Read the rest here

Old Browsers: Do they still exist?

Snook Go to the source

I’ve been thinking about this for a long time and while I thought I had a solid opinion on the matter, I find myself waffling on the issue. Who cares about older browsers? If you haven’t done so, I highly recommend cracking out a copy of Firefox 1. Start bouncing around to a few sites and check out what’s broken. Sure, most stuff is fine but you’d probably be surprised at what’s broken… Read the rest here

Ah, blogging: the new long-form Tweet. This morning I said : retraining myself not to /> close img, input, and meta tags. It’s an uphill battle. Which received an instant string of responses asking, in a nutshell, “why?” So I clarified : because I’m done with XHTML is why. … Read the rest here
