Stormtroopers 365

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Probably old news to some and nothing terribly educational, but this morning I was intrigued by the creativity in Stéfan Le Dû’s Stormtroopers 365 Flickr collection — a daily shot of Stormtroopers. The collection concluded on April 4, 2010. Below are a few of these. These kinds of activities are, in my mind, what keep the creative senses fresh, sharp, and well-rounded. … Read the rest here

Journey Through Canyons

I’ve hiked or backpacked three of the four canyons featured in Metron’s (no name given) film, Journey Through Canyons . Surprisingly, the Grand Canyon is the only one I’ve not seen in person. Be sure to check the Flickr photoset showing the DSLR gear used to create the film: Canyons, Making Of . … Read the rest here

Sennheiser MKE 400 Mini Shotgun Microphone : I own the RODE VideoMic , but the Sennheiser looks like it’s literally half the size. The all-metal construction is a plus over the RODE’s (nearly) all-plastic construction. … Read the rest here

The Magic Trackpad

Cameron Moll Go to the source

When Apple’s Magic Trackpad was announced on Tuesday, I was quick to order one. With the suite of software I use — design, video, sound and so on — having a gestural device on my desktop to interact with that software was an easy sell. I didn’t necessarily see it as a replacement for my mouse prior to purchasing, and since its arrival yesterday, I still don’t see it as a replacement. More about that in a minute. Size-wise, it’s a little over 5” by 5” square (13 cm × 13 cm). Compared to the trackpad on a MacBook Pro , it’s nearly twice as tall and roughly 1” wider. … Read the rest here

“In the End, We Are Our Choices. Build Yourself a Great Story.”

Cameron Moll Go to the source

“In the End, We Are Our Choices. Build Yourself a Great Story.” : Jeff Bezos, speaking to Princeton’s Baccalaureate Class of 2010: I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all. After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice…. When you are 80 years old, and in a quiet moment of reflection narrating for only yourself the most personal version of your life story, the telling that will be most compact and meaningful will be the series of choices you have made. In the end, we are our choices… Read the rest here

Capturing Ideas in the Shower

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Two sizes of dive slates, as displayed in my shower. I’ve written before about showering as an ideal model for creative pause —minimal distraction, mental freedom, and a change of scenery. What I haven’t written about is how to capture what comes of the pause. Inspiration is elusive and fleeting, and if it isn’t captured when it comes, it’s often gone for good. … Read the rest here

Daniel’s Monsters featured in Booth

Hicksdesign Go to the source

Booth is a beautiful annual poetry magazine (and weekly blog) published by Butler University in Indianapolis. To my surprise and delight, this years edition, which came out in May, featured Daniels Daily Monsters ! First, check out the gorgeous cover, which was part-inspiration for the little illustrations I’m doing on the site: The first page of the article featured the Monster that Leigh drew: And the accompanying spread shows not only my monsters, but also 2 that Samantha drew as well. The whole family got published! Tagged: danielsmonsters , press , published … Read the rest here

FullCodePress 2010

Jason Santa Maria Go to the source

I’m fresh back from New Zealand where I took part in FullCodePress , a knock down, drag out, web design competition to make a website for a charity in 24 hours. The competition was put on by the wonderful folks at Webstock and pitted teams from New Zealand , Australia , and the US against one another. Our teams were each paired with a charity, who was only revealed when the competition started. From there, each team took whatever assets the client brought along (all in various states of completion, or, uh, viability); copy, photos, and loads of information, to make a complete functioning website in a single day. … Read the rest here

iPhone Timelapse of St. Petersburg Sunset

iPhone Timelapse of St. Petersburg Sunset : So, I might have been lucky enough to capture an impressive sunset and even a brief video just 30 miles from St. Petersburg (and possibly even the same night), but Philip Bloom one-ups me by capturing the entire sunset with his iPhone 3GS using an app called iTimelapse . Only question is, what happens if you need to answer the phone in the middle of it all? … Read the rest here

Flickr Realigns its Photo Page : Not a drastic overhaul, but it needn’t be. Finally, a fluid Hicksdesign

Hicksdesign Go to the source

I’ve been wanting a fluid layout on this site for about 5 years. I had a brief redesign back in 2005 where I flirted with it for a few months, but it was soon switched back to fixed as I couldn’t get it right. Last year, I discovered CSS media queries while working on the internal pages of the Opera Browser, and tried to implement it here. It was half-assed and was removed, again after a few months. It took Ethan Marcotte’s excellent article for A List Apart Responsive Web Design to motivate me to do it properly, as well as know HOW to do it properly. I don’t think I’ve read anything as exciting and inspirational for a long time… Read the rest here
