Conferencing part 2 - SXSW

Andy Budd Go to the source

Every year SXSW takes on a slightly new dimension so it’s never the same experience twice. Change is inevitable and I always have a good time at the event. However I always find myself harking back to years gone by. I guess that’s age for you. This year attendance had grown by around 30%, and numbers fluctuated between 6,000 and 12,000 depending on who you spoke to. One things was certain though

The Audio of the System of the World

Adactio Go to the source

Four months after the curtain went down on dConstruct 2008 , the final episode of the podcast of the conference has just been published. It’s the audio recording of my talk The System Of The World . I’m very happy indeed with how the talk turned out: dense and pretentious …but in a good way, I hope. It’s certainly my favourite from the presentations I have hitherto delivered. Feel free to: listen to the recording of The System Of The World , read the hypertext document The System Of The World or look through the slides on Slideshare … Read the rest here

UX London Registration Launches

Andy Budd Go to the source

Ticket sales for UX London launched today so I thought I’d take this opportunity to outline what we’re trying to achieve with this event. A lot of industry conferences are what I’d describe as “talking heads” events, where well known speakers stand up for an hour and give the audience a big does of inspiration. I love these type of events and this is essentially what we do at dConstruct . I always come away with a head full of ideas and an a renewed interest in my profession. The one criticism I hear is that, while these events are inspiring, you don’t usually end up learning new skills. I think a lot of people blame the speakers or conference organisers for this, but I actually think it’s down to the format… Read the rest here

I recently finished reading The Ghost Map by Steven Johnson ; a thoroughly enjoyable book. Steven was the keynote speaker at this year

post-dConstruct

Adactio Go to the source

dConstruct is over for another year. I think everyone is in agreement that this was the best one yet. The parties were full of WIN, the venue was great and the speakers were on top form. Admittedly, the weather was crap but that’s somewhat beyond our control. … Read the rest here

dConstruct 2008: Cognitive Bias and Social Design

Digital Web Go to the source

There have been a couple of great presentations either side of lunch here at dConstruct. Joshua Porter — social web expert and occasional Digital Web contributor — revealed the hidden mental tics (or “cognitive biases”) that designers should be aware of when thinking about how best to attract engage with their users; and Daniel Burka (Pownce, Digg) shared his recommendations on how to approach the key pain points when designing for social interaction. Keep an eye out for the dConstruct podcasts of these talks; in the meantime, Daniel’s slides are on SlideShare — when I find Josh’s I’ll post the link here too. … Read the rest here

Digital Web goes to dConstruct

Digital Web Go to the source

The UK arm of Digital Web (editor Frances Berriman and me) are at Brighton’s annual dConstruct conference today to hear some of the web’s leading thinkers talk about Designing The Social Web. Steven Johnson is up first, drawing parallels between modern information design and cholera epidemics (London’s “social network of dead people”, as he puts it). Also in evidence is Clearleft’s Silverback gorilla , dispensing promotional bananas (yes, really) to the assembled geeks. If you’re at the conference, please come and say hi! … Read the rest here

pre-dConstruct

Adactio Go to the source

It’s D-Day in Brighton. In just a few more hours, dConstruct will commence at the Brighton Dome. Twitter is all a-twitter as the geek invasion reaches critical mass. It’s wonderful having so many friends descend on Brighton in one go. It seems like half of the UK geek scene and a goodly portion of San Francisco are already here. … Read the rest here

Silverback, One Month On

Andy Budd Go to the source

Silverback launched just over a month ago and what a roller coaster month that was. We launched towards the end of July and within the first couple of days the app had been downloaded 7,000 times. Thirty days on and well over 20,000 people have grabbed themselves a copy. Crikey! For the first couple of weeks the whole company was hooked on the Twitter feedback. I had a Summize window permanently open and kept refreshing the search every few minutes. Messages were coming thick and fast and I was pretty bowled over by the feedback… Read the rest here

dConstruct Workshops

Andy Budd Go to the source

As well as a great line-up of speakers we’ve got some amazing workshops at this year’s dConstruct. We only launched them a couple of days ago, but several of them are already half full, so we expect them to sell out a lot faster than they did last year. I think people have realised that the workshops are one of the best was to guarantee a place at dConstruct, which typically sells out in under 24 hours. However I think it’s mostly down to the fantastic people we’ve got running these workshops. It’s just a shame that I can’t see them all! First up we have Lane Becker , Thor Muller and Leslie Chicoine from Get Satisfaction running a session on building and managing online communities . They will cover everything from the effect design can have on community growth and behaviour, through to community managers and dealing with unhappy campers. … Read the rest here
