On Wearing the iPod Nano as a Watch

Cameron Moll Go to the source

On Wearing the iPod Nano as a Watch : John Gruber, referring to an article by Nilay Patel : Relevant today because I just got my TikTok band for the Nano , as my reward for backing the wildly-successful Kickstarter project . The TikTok is everything I could have hoped for: the Nano fits perfectly and the wristband is supple and comfortable. But for the reasons outlined by Patel above, the current Nano just isn’t ideal for use as a full-time wristwatch. Not promising for me, as I believe my TikTok is sitting in my business UPS mailbox as I write this. The good news? I ordered the TikTok before shelling out cash for a Nano, which I still haven’t done… Read the rest here

Iceland Air

Andy Budd Go to the source

A couple of months ago I traveled to Reykjavik as a guest of Iceland Air to speak at a web design conference they were sponsoring. My talk was all about delivering exceptional customer service so it’s ironic that I received some of the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced at the hands of their UK team. It all started when my bags got lost of the return journey. Loosing bags seems an unavoidable part of modern air travel and I’d had lost bags successfully returned in the past so wasn’t that worried. I simply logged the loss at Heathrow and two days later my bag was found and delivered to me. However upon receipt of the bag I noticed that it was lighter and decidedly less bulky that I remembered… Read the rest here

Memetic Epidemiology

Eric Meyer Go to the source

I had planned to spend yesterday goofing off, as is my tradition for the day after I return from a conference and don’t have anything immediately pressing on my plate. Instead I watched and documented, as best I could, a case of memetic epidemiology happen in realtime. The meme was the Cooks Source story, which I stumbled across relatively early in the day. I won’t recap the story here, as the original LiveJournal post by Monica Gaudio and Edward Champion’s very well-researched article do a much better job of that. The latter piece is particularly commendable if you’re new to the story, as it not only explains the genesis of the incident but also lays bare a number of other things that were discovered as the story went ballistic. I’m not sure exactly where I first came across the story—probably a retweet of Adam Banks by a friend of mine —but at the time the meme was really just getting started. … Read the rest here

A Textile Filter for BBEdit?

Eric Meyer Go to the source

A few days back I tweeted a request for a Textile filter for BBEdit , which is one of those things people have asked for over the years but has never actually appeared. There’s been a Markdown filter since forever, but since I find myself on Basecamp a lot for business reasons and Basecamp uses Textile I’d really prefer to stick to one syntax instead of constantly confusing myself by switching between two similar syntaxes. (And I prefer to use BBEdit because I like it a lot, know it well, and have no compelling reason to switch. Please take any thoughts of text-editor snobbery or flamewars elsewhere.) In response, the mighty Arlen Walker told me how to install Xcode, the Text::Textile module, and a short Perl script to drop into ~/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/Unix Support/Unix Filters . I did that, and it all worked, but I was unhappy with the <span class="caps"> that default Textile litters all over. I tried to disable it, failed, tweeted for help, and was contacted by the incredible Brad Choate (who wrote the Text::Textile module!). … Read the rest here

Ten years of

If you’re looking for something to give you inspiration, not just visually, but on a business level too, this is the book you need to buy: It’s not often I get so excited about a book (the last one was Jon Burgermans Pens are my friends ) but “I’m all over this” as the young people like to say. Threadless: Ten Years of T-shirts from the World’s Most Inspiring Online Design Community could’ve just been a published collection of illustrations from Threadless shirts, and still would’ve been a must-buy. The variety and quality of Threadless designs are stunning, and I’ve always touted them as an inspiration source in talks like “How to be a Creative Sponge”. It goes much further than that though. … Read the rest here

Apple TV 2, double

Hicksdesign Go to the source

After the announcement of the new Apple TV my disappointment was perhaps inevitable. I try not to let the rumours build up my expectations of a unannounced product, but in the case of the AppleTV I couldn’t help it. 2 weeks later, and I’m coming around to the idea. I’ve calmed down about the whole rental thing, and realised that I’ve missed the ramifications of Airplay. Thinking of Apple TV 2 as more of an airport express that does video and photos, and it suddenly starts to feel right. The ability to stream from Macs and iOS devices is very appealing, and could well be the winning aspect . … Read the rest here

The digital economy act to kill start-up culture in the UK

Andy Budd Go to the source

The recent passing of the UK Digital Economy Act has generated outrage amongst the web community. Large media business have effectively lobbied government under the spurious claim that without protection the future of the digital economy in the UK is at threat. However the future of digital isn’t locked inside a few big content companies distributing their goods electronically. The future of the digital economy is in empowering a creative class to produce new and as yet unheard of business opportunities on the web. So rather than protecting the digital economy, the Digital Economy Act will have the effect of protecting outdated business models and harming innovation in the UK and handing over initiative to more liberal and less restrictive countries. One potentially damaging aspect facing UK start-ups and freelancers is the one makes the owners of open wifi networks responsible for the traffic that passes over the network… Read the rest here
