Vigilance and Victory

Eric Meyer Go to the source

After the blackout on Wednesday, it seems that the political tides are shifting against SOPA and the PROTECT IP Act—as of this writing, there are now more members of Congress in opposition to the bills than in favor. That’s good news. I wil reiterate something I said on Twitter, though: the members of tech community, particularly those who are intimately familiar with the basic protocols of the Internet, need to keep working on ways to counteract SOPA/PIPA. What form that would take, I’m not sure. Maybe a truly distributed DNS system, one that can’t be selectively filtered by any one government or other entity. I’m not an expert in the area, so I don’t actually know if that’s feasible… Read the rest here

Bulletproof Web Design, Third Edition

SimpleBits Go to the source

Yesterday, a copy of my latest book arrived in the mail, the Third Edition of Bulletproof Web Design . The first edition came out back in 2005, and I’ve been revising it every few years. This latest edit was a bit larger than the 2nd because so much has changed. HTML5, CSS3, Responsive Web Design—all of these things dovetail nicely into the core bulletproof concepts from the original book. If you have the 2nd edition, the new version is likely not a necessary upgrade (New Riders probably loves me for saying that). Meaning, the guidelines for building flexible websites are still there, but a lot of the code and some of the examples have been brought up to speed. … Read the rest here

Amazon’s Kindle Cloud Reader : Neato. An in-browser reader. Now I can read my Kindle books on every piece of Apple hardware I own. I’d be the first to admit that the geekery of bike components appeals to me as much as the actual cycling. As the author Robert Penn says It’s all about the Bike . I’m currently fiddling away on a road bike project , using a 10 year old Peugeot picked up off ebay as the basis, and choosing replacement parts is great fun. My tastes started off retro, or ‘vintage’ as the cycling crowd would call it (retro to them means the ’80s), preferring steel, honey brown leather and highly polished metal. Recently though, I’ve been getting into the look of more contemporary parts just as much. … Read the rest here

AisleOne’s Antonio Carusone: A Backup System

Cameron Moll Go to the source

AisleOne’s Antonio Carusone: A Backup System : I would imagine this is as thorough and redundant as a backup system gets. 6 copies of vital data, 3 copies of unimportant data — spread across Backblaze , Dropbox, iDisk, and a few local drives. There’s a nifty diagram , even. I’m also in the process of assembling a backup system. I went with Crashplan instead of Backblaze because of the option to have a seeded backup drive (scroll down) shipped to your home for the initial backup. Additionally, I purchased a refurbished Airport Extreme to which I’ll attach a Western Elements 2 TB drive . … Read the rest here

Amazon launches Simple Email Service

Amazon has launched a new API for sending email "in the cloud" called Simple Email Service . Like other Amazon services, one of the biggest draws—besides using the solid infrastructure—is the pricing. You can send up to 2,000 emails a day absolutely free. After that, you’re looking at 10 cents per thousand emails and 15 cents per GB of data transfer. … Read the rest here

Boxee Box UK Pre-orders

We’re getting very close to the release of the Boxee Box, so Boxee have a published a list of retailers who are stocking it at launch. UK folks be aware, that the release date is now November 15th (not 10th). What’s more, I’ve been told that D-Link are only shipping 250 units to the UK for that date, with more coming later on. I’m not sure whether that’s a normal amount for a device like this, but it sounds very small. … Read the rest here

I done a podcast! In each episode, ClagTunes will feature five of my favourite tracks; four of which I will have bought since the previous episode of the podcast, plus one bonus track from the archive, so to speak. Ten years of

If you’re looking for something to give you inspiration, not just visually, but on a business level too, this is the book you need to buy: It’s not often I get so excited about a book (the last one was Jon Burgermans Pens are my friends ) but “I’m all over this” as the young people like to say. Threadless: Ten Years of T-shirts from the World’s Most Inspiring Online Design Community could’ve just been a published collection of illustrations from Threadless shirts, and still would’ve been a must-buy. The variety and quality of Threadless designs are stunning, and I’ve always touted them as an inspiration source in talks like “How to be a Creative Sponge”. It goes much further than that though. … Read the rest here

Apple TV 2, double

Hicksdesign Go to the source

After the announcement of the new Apple TV my disappointment was perhaps inevitable. I try not to let the rumours build up my expectations of a unannounced product, but in the case of the AppleTV I couldn’t help it. 2 weeks later, and I’m coming around to the idea. I’ve calmed down about the whole rental thing, and realised that I’ve missed the ramifications of Airplay. Thinking of Apple TV 2 as more of an airport express that does video and photos, and it suddenly starts to feel right. The ability to stream from Macs and iOS devices is very appealing, and could well be the winning aspect . … Read the rest here

TypeCon 2010

Clagnut Go to the source

TypeCon2010 in Los Angeles was my first typography conference. It felt good. I was made welcome, made new friends and renewed old acquaintances . I was there to soak up what’s happening now in typography, and to represent Fontdeck , who were very pleased to be a sponsor of the conference. Luke Dorny, Ale Paul, Grant Hutchinson & Corey Holms TypeCon felt like a tiny SxSW with far prettier schwag. As in Austin, the conference was as much about the corridor talk as the presentations, although 400 people (as opposed to 14,000) lent itself to a far more intimate atmosphere, but there was the same vibe of being allowed to geek out among like-minded souls. … Read the rest here
