ColosseoType.com, An All-HTML5 Endeavor

Cameron Moll Go to the source

ColosseoType.com, An All-HTML5 Endeavor : The site for the Colosseo poster is my first production-ready website with HTML5 under the hood. I’ve coded sites semantically with HTML5 class names before (see Jon Tan’s article ), but this is the first with legitimate HTML5 elements such as and in the markup. IE doesn’t yet recognize HTML5, so I’ve added Remy Sharp’s HTML5 shiv script , which forces IE to acknowledge the new elements. Granted, the Colosseo site is a one-pager, but hey, it’s a start. Update: It looks like Firefox 2.x doesn’t play well with HTML5, either. Here’s another article from Remy Sharp on getting Firefox 2 to recognize HTML5… Read the rest here

New Design, New Host, and Tumblr: How, Why

Cameron Moll Go to the source

The malware attack(s) that my site suffered in recent weeks put into motion a series of changes which have been planned for some time now—some for a few months, some for a couple years. What follows is a detailed explanation of the changes. New Design Over Christmas Break in 2007, I started two redesigns: One for Authentic Jobs and another for this site. The premise for this realign encompassed a concept that wasn’t original, but one that I felt better suited my style of blogging. You see, I’ve always enjoyed posting links as much as I’ve enjoyed posting articles. … Read the rest here

My (revised) video setup: Canon EOS 7D

Cameron Moll Go to the source

After just a couple weeks of testing, I gave up on the Canon HG10 w/35mm for shooting HD video. Not only was the quality not stellar, but it’s a hack that’s cumbersome and really difficult to work with. Following an enormous amount of deliberation and questioning if so many dollar signs were really worth it, I bit the bullet and sprung for a Canon EOS 7D and some quality lenses. No mistaking, this thing shoots incredible photos and equally impressive 1080p HD video. I still have plenty to learn about the camera and photography in general, but so far I’m really pleased with it… Read the rest here

Inspector Scrutiny

Eric Meyer Go to the source

It’s been said before that web inspectors—Firebug, Dragonfly, the inspectors in Safari and Chrome, and so forth—are not always entirely accurate. A less charitable characterization is that they lie to us, but that’s not exactly right. The real truth is that web inspectors repeat to us the lies they are told, which are the same lies we can be told to our faces if we ask directly. Here’s how I know this to be so: body {font-size: medium;} Just that. Apply it to a test page . Inspect the body element in any web inspector you care to fire up. … Read the rest here

Teehan+Lax: iPad GUI PSD

Teehan+Lax: iPad GUI PSD : Building on their popular iPhone GUI PSD , this vector-based PSD is fully editable and scalable. It even includes “missing Flash plugin” icon. Impressive stuff, especially considering Teehan+Lax posted this just a few days after the iPad announcement. And if OmniGraffle is your thing, iA has published an iPad stencil for Omnigraffle . … Read the rest here

Events and A Day, Belatedly

Eric Meyer Go to the source

I’m a bad conference organizer. Why? Because we opened the An Event Apart 2010 schedule for sales back in, um, flippin’ November , and I never mentioned it here. Cripes, I never even posted when we announced the lineup of cities. I could go through the great big long sob-story list of reasons why 2009 was really tough and blah blah blah, but when you get right down to it, I fell down on my job. Okay… Read the rest here

My video setup: Canon HG10 with 35mm adapter

Cameron Moll Go to the source

I’ve had a penchant for filmmaking ever since I was a little kid. I’ve never had the right equipment, though. I’m trying to finally change that, while still trying to stay within budget. The photo above shows the setup I’ve been piecing together over the last few weeks. I haven’t shot anything with it yet, but I’ll give it a good run in a couple weeks when I film the Colosseo letterpress poster being printed… Read the rest here

Events in 2010

This year will be a busy one in terms of speaking events. I’m currently crafting a brand new talk titled, “The CSS3 Experience”. It’ll focus on enriching the experience layer with advanced CSS and CSS3. Everyone can easily add enhancements to to their designs when focusing on the interactions and events that happen on the page. And by targeting the user experience with these new and evolving standards, you can start using these flexible techniques now, on any site, with less worry. Well damn, that sounded rather pitchy, didn’t it… Read the rest here

Do what works best for you, not them

Cameron Moll Go to the source

Of the many things we do well as creative professionals, we often forget to think for ourselves, relying on thought leaders to determine what works for us and what doesn’t. Paramount in this failure to think for one’s self is the fact that these thought leaders often struggle to encourage others to explore new thinking without belittling their methods–or worse, ostracizing them–in the process. Whether or not the title of thought leader can be applied to myself, I’m just as guilty as anyone else. In ” 20 tips for better conference speaking “, I offer this short-sighted observation: There is absolutely no reason in the world you should use anything other than Keynote. … Read the rest here

It’s so easy to wallow in self-pity when things don’t go right. As much as 2009 sucked on all levels, it wasn’t all bad. As much as I want to sulk, the fact remains that I live a charmed life. Through some karmic luck of the draw, I’ve got a lot to be thankful for. Personal Projects This past year was a year of simplication and basically had me letting go of all my personal projects—at least for the time being. I shut down SidebarAds, I never worked on Snitter, and I never finished Haylia, FontSmack or any number of other personal projects that I wanted to work on… Read the rest here

Loo Copywriting

Hicksdesign Go to the source

While travelling this Christmas, I came upon some copywriting in a loo that I took umbridge with: 10-15 seconds and 80% less energy? Rather than 2 seconds and 0% energy? It’s really that last sarcastic last line that got to me though. It’s like the signs you get in hotels, claiming that they don’t want to wash your towels every day because they’re very concerned about the ‘environment’. ‘Well now’, I DID use my jeans, so that taught them! Fools! Since when did we become Americans and start calling the toilet a ‘bathroom’? And surely ‘as nature intended’ would be actually be a large bush… Read the rest here

Ten design tenets of Dieter Rams

Clagnut Go to the source

Earlier this month, Clearleft went on a company outing to the Design Museum in London. There we spent some quality time perusing the work of the influential former Braun industrial designer, Dieter Rams . Accompanying the exhibition were these design tenets penned by the man himself. Opera 10.5 pre-alpha next week

Hicksdesign Go to the source

Things have been a bit quieter around here lately, and here’s why. Everyone at Opera has been gearing up to release a sneaky peek of Opera 10.5 before Christmas comes! This isn’t even at an Alpha stage but it will show off, not necessarily new features (there are some though), but some rather big improvements in various areas. One of which has already been hinted at in the post on Choose Opera – speed . Can’t say anymore yet, but it will out on Tuesday 22nd December so you’ll soon be able to play with it, and find out. … Read the rest here

Boxee Box

Hicksdesign Go to the source

I’m more than just a few days late with this one, but I couldn’t let this pass without a mention! On Monday, Boxee unveiled their Boxee Box , a collaboration with D-Link to provide their own hardware solution. My initial reaction was that it looked like an award, and something that wouldn’t fit snugly into existing setups: However, once I saw just how small it is… …I changed my mind somewhat. In fact, the shape has very quickly grown on me, and in short, I really want one , despite already running Boxee via an Apple TV. (the restrictive supported formats, and size of, the PS3 are starting to get to me). It’ll be interesting to see if it get’s a UK release and what the cost will be. I seem to recall the US price being $200, which should translate into roughly £120… Read the rest here
